Local Research for Better Lives

Doing Research Program

Maria Balarin, GRADE, Peru, at a seminar on building research culture in developing countries, New Delhi.

The Doing Research program has two phases of development, and activities are currently in phase two. The Doing Research pilot was the first phase, which aimed to characterize, describe, and, whenever possible, measure the most relevant features of the research environment across eleven countries. The second, scale-up phase was recently launched, and aims to reach 50 countries. During this scale up, it will implement the Doing Research Assessment in 3-5 countries, as proof of concept.

I. Doing Research Pilot

The Doing Research pilot aimed to characterize, describe, and, whenever possible, measure the most relevant features of the research environment across eleven countries. It was implemented by GDN between April 2014 and April 2016 with seven research teams in Africa (Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, South Africa), Latin America (Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru) and Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia). Covering a diverse sample of countries in very different contexts, and using varied research methodologies, the pilot provided rich qualitative information on the complex nature of research environments. Find out about the teams and read the case studiesRead the Pilot Phase Synthesis. Download the full Evaluation Report. The Doing Research Pilot was generously supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Agence Française de Développement(AFD), French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

II. Doing Research Scale-Up

GDN is now aiming to scale up the Doing Research program to 50 countries. During this scale up, it is implementing the Doing Research Assessment in 3-5 countries as proof of concept. See details of the kick-off.

Proof of Concept

Building on its network of research institutions and prior work in the pilot phase, GDN is putting forward the Doing Research Assessments, an approach that will inform research policy and capacity building by drawing on a detailed analysis of the national research systems in three countries - Bolivia, Indonesia, and Nigeria. The program will produce knowledge on the performance of research systems, release original data on research systems and organize discussions and outreach about strengthening research systems to enable social progress. GDN will ensure that results are locally relevant, actionable and comparable. More can be found about the research teams working on this here.

Funding

Proof of concept activities are funded with Core Funds from the Global Development Network. To support this work, please contact Francesco Obino, Head of Programs on fobino@gdn.int
