Summary

Soon after the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, a report titled ‘Doing Research in Myanmar – Country Update 2022’, was produced by the Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD) – the agency which had also produced a Doing Research Assessment for Myanmar in 2020. The 2022 update included a commentary on the role of international donors interested in higher education reform in the post-coup era – now being made publicly available as excerpts of the original report – by Prof. Charlotte Galloway, Honorary Associate Professor, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Australian National University.

Prof. Galloway has been supporting the Global Development Network’s efforts in Myanmar since the program’s inception. Her piece is a reflection on the present and future of international support to higher education and research in Myanmar, and a reminder to the international community that the future of the country depends on the next generation of social scientists, at home and in exile. “The challenges going forward are multi-factorial, however, they are not insurmountable,”she concludes. The piece provides a comprehensive look at higher education in Myanmar in the last decade, as well as at curriculum reform and pedagogy, international networks, governance and the impact of the coup in 2021.
