The winners of the Medals for Research on Development in the theme of 'Urban Externalities (Contagious Disease, Congestion and Crime) and Urban Poverty' are:
- First Prize (US$10,000): CHENG, Zhiming, China – ‘Layoffs and Urban Poverty in the State-owned Enterprise Communities in Shaanxi Province, China’, The University of Wollongong, Australia
- Second Prize (US$5,000): BENAVIDES, Martin, Peru – ‘Family Well-being, Women Attitudes and the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence in Urban Areas in Peru’, GRADE
The winners of the Medals for Research on Development in the theme of ‘The Enabling Environment – Housing, Transportation and Infrastructure’ (listed alphabetically) are:

The concluding round of the Competition took place at GDN’s 13th Annual Global Development Conference in Budapest, Hungary (16-18 June, 2012) where an eminent panel of judges selected the winners.
